Slavery (involuntary servitude) begins in the colonies: The Court of Northampton County, Virginia hands down Johnson v. Parker: John Casar, who has completed his contract of indenture to Anthony Johnson—one of the original indentured servants brought from Africa in 1619—should be Johnson’s servant for life (slave). Previously all indentured servants were given title to 50 acres of land at the conclusion of their obligatory service.
