A battalion sized force of the Army of Turkey marches one and a half miles into northern Iraq, leaving behind a potential invading force of 100,000 troops massed on the border.  At the same time fifty combat aircraft from the Air Force of Turkey conducts air strikes against Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq.  Although northern Iraq (semiautonomous Kurdistan) is the calmest of that nation, it is regarded by Turkey as a threat to its dominance over its Kurdish areas that border Iraq.  The government of Turkey fears the PKK will continue to push for the violent establishment of an independent Kurdistan.
