The United States Army (private mercenaries) raids the liaison office of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in Irbil, Iraq, and abducts five diplomatic personnel.

Postscript: The diplomats were held in U.s. custody until July 9, 2009.  That was more than twice as long as the Iranian Hostage Crisis, 1979-81: 911 days versus 444 days.
