ELECTION DAY: De jure President Hamid Karzai, of Afghanistan (de facto Mayor of Kabul) wins re-election with 49.7% of the vote.  Also-rans include

  • Abdullah Abdullah, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, candidate of the National Coalition, 30.6%;
  • Independent candidate, Ramazan Bashardout, former Minister of Planning, 10.5%;
  • Independent candidate, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, former Minister of Finance, 2.9%;
  • Independent representative, Mirwais Yasini, of Nangarhar Province, 1.0%; and
  • Twenty-seven others, 5.3%.

       NOTE: In various polling sites across Kandahar Province Karzai polled between 99 and 105% of the vote.
