United states Armed Forces (private mercenaries) searching for weapons, arrest Laith al-Ani, a 31-year-old, Sunni (legacy of Mohammed) Moslem, women’s clothing retailer and father of two, after they found an Army of Iraq uniform in a common area of the apartment building he lives in. Ani is asked personal questions about his family and religion, but nothing about terrorism.
Postscript: Ani was held without being charged for the next two years, and questioned only twice. But he was routinely subjected to prolonged heat and cold, and tortured with an electric Taser, once on his tongue, which prevented him from eating for almost a week. Before being released Ani was asked to sign a statement saying that “I didn’t go through any abuse during detention.” Standing next to him was a guard holding an electric Taser. In the weeks following Ani’s release, he narrowly escaped several murder attempts by rival Shi`ite-(partisans of Ali) Moslems, before fleeing, with his family, to the safety of Damascus, Syria. “I am an Iraqi, I love my country. … The United [s]tates through its actions made people hate the Americans much more than before.”
