The Resolution Trust Corporation estimates that the final cost to the United states Treasury for liquidating the 747 failed savings and loan associations would be 87,900,000,000 “dollars.”
Postscript: Four years later, when the last of the insolvent thrifts had been liquidated and depositors had been paid off, the loss to the UST was nearly 50% greater, at 124,000,000,000 “dollars.”
