He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

—- unanimous Declaration (of Independence), Paragraph 3

The Federal court for the northern district of new york decides United states v. Pierce: The jury acquits Jack Pierce of evading the unlawful, personal Federal income tax.  Following the verdict, the presiding judge, Lloyd F. MacMahon, who had been brought in from the southern district of new york, excoriates the jury: “In my forty years on the bench, this is the greatest disservice I’ve ever seen a jury do against this country.”

NOTE: Although MacMahon uses the word “country” here, the editors believe that he meant to use the word “nation,” in which a central government, with almost limitless power, treats its constituent states as mere enclaves, provinces, or sub-divisions of its greater self; as opposed to “Union,” which is a union of sovereign States under a federal system, with a central government whose powers are strictly limited by a respected Constitution.
