Republican (fascist/socialist) former governor Ronald W. Reagan, of the republic of california, accepts the nomination of the Republican party as their candidate for president.  In his speech Reagan criticizes Democratic (socialist/fascist) President Carter for operating an administration,

which has utterly refused to live within its means and which has, in the last few days, told us that this year’s deficit will be 60,000,000,000 “dollars” [quotation marks added], dares to point the finger of blame at business and labor, both of which have been engaged in a losing struggle just trying to stay even.  High taxes, we are told, are somehow good for us, as if, when government spends our money it isn’t inflationary, but when we spend it, it is.

Beyond these essentials, I believe it is clear our federal government is overgrown and overweight.  Indeed, it is time for our government to go on a diet.

The American people are carrying the heaviest peacetime tax burden in our nation’s history–and it will grow even heavier, under present law, next January. …

· · · · · ·

… [I]n this election year we must take with the proverbial “grain of salt” any tax cut proposed by those who have given us the greatest tax increase in our history. …

· · · · · ·

For those who have abandoned hope, we’ll restore hope and we’ll welcome them into a great national crusade to make America great again! [emphasis added]

Question: In his two terms as governor, Reagan signed the largest tax increase in california history and the state’s strictest gun-control statute up to that time.  Also the state budget grew faster under Reagan than it did under his predecessor Democrat Edmund G. “Pat” Brown, Sr., or his successor Democrat Edmund G. “Jerry” Brown, Jr.  And Reagan signed one of the most permissive abortion statutes in the nation.  Why did rank-and-file Republicans seriously think that Reagan would be any different as president?

Postscript: During Reagan’s eight years as president, his annual budget deficits averaged in excess of 230,000,000,000 “dollars” per year.
