The “Prague Spring” begins: The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia elects Alexander Dubcek to the post of First Secretary of the CPC.  Dubcek begins implementing “Socialism with a human face”:

  • Increased Freedoms of Press, Speech, and Travel,
  • Greater selection and abundance of consumer goods,
  • Curtailing the powers of the secret police, and
  • A ten-year transition to multiparty democracy.
