United states Navy Lieutenant Commander John S. McCain, III, of the USS Oriskany, is shot down by anti-aircraft fire, while flying his A4E Skyhawk over Hanoi, North Vietnam.  McCain suffers fractures to one leg and both arms most likely due to failure place his appendages in the proper position, upon ejection, as he had been trained to do.

Postscript: McCain spent the next five years as a prisoner of war at the Hoa Loa Prison (a.k.a. “Hanoi Hilton”), where he was kept separated from the other prisoners, in a furnished apartment, well-fed, provided with fresh clothes and prostitutes, and regularly received visits from North Vietnamese officials, including, General Vo Nguyen Giap, the hero of the Battle of Dienbienphu.
