The Cold War continues: Lavrenty Pavlovich Beria, Minister of Internal Affairs, of the communist Soviet Union, declares martial law in the satellite Democratic Republic of (East) Germany.  The day before East German citizens began rioting against the government of First Secretary Walter E.P. Ulbricht, demanding his resignation, a reduction in production quotas and free elections.
