The Israeli War of Independence ends: Emissaries from Israel and Syria sign an armistice to end hostilities but do not recognize each other diplomatically.
NOTE: Previously, Israel signed similar armistices with Egypt (February), Lebanon (March) and Jordan (April). Iraq has never officially terminated the conflict.
