Ernest Bevin, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, and Georges-Augustin Bidault, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of France, sign the Treaty of Dunkirk ostensibly committing both nations to a mutual defense pact against any future military aggression by Germany.
NOTE: Although Germany was singled out as the potential threat, everyone understood the real threat was from the Soviet Union.
