Manuel Avila Camacho, Secretary of National Defense, candidate of the status quo Party of the Mexican Revolution (a.k.a. Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI)), for President of Mexico, claims electoral victory with 93.9% of the vote, Also rans include,

  • Retired General Juan Andreu Almazan, of the Army of Mexico, candidate of the personality Revolutionary Party of National Unification (PRUN), with 5.7%; and
  • Independent candidate Rafael Sanchez Tapia with 0.4%. 

During the election campaign several of Almazan’s supporters were murdered.

       NOTE: The PRI has now maintained an 11 year monopoly on political power.
