Henry Morgenthau, Jr., secretary of the treasury, in testimony before the house ways and means committee, admits the failures of New Deals I (1933 – 1935) and II (1935-1939):

We have tried spending money.  We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work.

I want to see this country prosperous.  I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat.  We have never made good on our promises

· · · · · ·

I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started. … And an enormous debt to boot!

       NOTES:

  • Morgenthau said that seven years after Franklin Roosevelt, Esq., became President, and at this point unemployment was still higher than it had been in 1931, the year before he was elected.
  • As an attorney (Officer of the Court) Roosevelt was ineligible to serve in two branches of government at the same time, according to Article I, Section 6 [Clause 2]
