Andrew W. Mellon, secretary of the treasury, appoints Harry Jacob Anslinger, Assistant Commissioner of the Bureau of Prohibition, to be the first Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics.

       NOTE: Anslinger was married to Mellon’s niece.

       Postscript: Anslinger would remain in his position for over three decades.
