While the army and navy of the United states are in France and Russia making “the world safe for democracy,” the Federal court for the northern district of the Federal enclave of Ohio hands down United states v. Debs, sentencing Eugene V. Debs, perennial presidential candidate for the Socialist Party, to ten years in prison for speaking out against U.s. participation in the Great War (World War I).
