Arthur James Balfour, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs writes to President Lionel Walter Rothschild, of the Zionist Federation: “His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object.”
NOTE: The Balfour Declaration conflicts with previous promises made by the United Kingdom concerning Palestine: Establishment of an independent pan-Arabic nation, which was to include Palestine; and division of the Arab enclaves of the Ottoman Empire between the United Kingdom and the Republic of France for colonial exploitation.
