The Charge up “San Juan Hill”: During the Spanish-American War, Theodore Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, commanding his “Rough Rider Militia” (citizen-volunteers) take Kettle Hill. Roosevelt was only able to take the hill, after the Tenth Cavalry of the Army of the United States (a racially segregated unit composed entirely of African heritage, known as the “Buffalo Soldiers”) softened the way, suffering 90% casualties, on its way up.
