Republican (nationalist) President Grant signs the Page Immigration Act, banning the immigration of Chinese women into the nation as they are deemed to be of immoral character, also imposing a one-year prison sentence and 2,000 Dollar fine for hiring a Chinese national.  The act also levies a 50 Cent head tax on all immigrants in violation of Article I, Section 9 [Clause 4].
