Congressional (radical) Reconstruction continues: Commander-in-Chief Grant suspends the writ of habeas corpus in nine counties, in the Independent Republic of South Carolina, because of racist Ku Klux Klan violence.
Postscript: Grant later sent in the Army of the United states to augment the anti-Klan effort.
NOTE: While the editors deplore all racist ideologies espoused by organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan, they find meddling by the Federal government into a State’s internal affairs to be equally reprehensible.
