The Franco-Prussian War ends: Jules Claude Gabriel Favre, Foreign Minister for the provisional Government of National Defence of France, and Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, of the North German Confederation, sign the Armistice of Versailles, recognizing the creation of the Empire of Germany, and ceding the enclave of Alsace-Lorraine as a concession of war.

NOTE: Following this defeat, a wave of anti-Semitism began to sweep through France, as Jews were blamed for the French defeat.
