War Democrat (constitutionalist) de facto President Andrew Johnson (a Citizen of the confederate State of Tennessee) “suspends” (not fires) Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War, after Stanton informed Johnson that the Republican (nationalist) 39th Constitutional Congress has bypassed him as Commander-in-Chief and routed the chain of command through the military commanders of the confederate States directly to the House of Representatives. Johnson appoints Major General Ulysses Simpson (a.k.a. Hiram Ulysses) Grant, General in Chief, as interim Secretary of War.
