In a letter to John Emerich Edward Dalberg, Lord Acton, General Robert E. Lee, former General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States, expresses the erosion of State sovereignty the will eventually come now that the Confederacy has fallen: “The consolidation of the [S]tates into one vast empire, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of ruin which has overwhelmed all that preceded it.”
