The Battle of Westport (Missouri): Major General Samuel R. Curtis, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Border, defeats the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Missouri, commanded by Major General Sterling Price.
NOTE: About 3,000 Americans lost their lives, in a battle that saw the end of Confederate resistance west of the Mississippi River.
