Captain David G. Farragut, commanding the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, of the Navy of the united States, sails passed Forts Jackson and St. Philip, on the Mississippi River.  This leaves New Orleans, Louisiana, the largest city in the Confederacy untenable.

       Postscript: New Orleans surrendered to the Army of the united States the next day.
