The First Battle of Kernstown (Virginia): Colonel Nathan Kimball, commanding the compulsory Union First Division of V Corps, defeats the Confederate (a voluntary union) “Stonewall” Division, commanded by Major General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.
NOTE: This defeat opened the Shenandoah Valley to compulsory Union invasion.
