Non-partisan (constitutionalist) Governor Isham G. Harris, of Tennessee, refuses the call from Commander-in-Chief Abraham Lincoln, of the united states, for volunteers to subdue the Confederate States: “Tennessee will not furnish a single man for the purpose of coercion, but 50 thousand necessary for the defense of our rights. …”
NOTE: In addition to Kentucky and Tennessee, the governors of Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and the Commonwealth of Virginia each refused Lincoln’s request.
