The Militia of Alabama seizes Forts Morgan and Gaines, which protect the entrance to Mobile Bay.  The Militia also seizes the federal arsenal at Mount Vernon.

       Commander-in-Chief Buchanan orders the USS Star of the West to resupply Fort Sumter, South Carolina.

       NOTE: Buchanan had no reason to do this, other than to exacerbate tensions between the united States and South Carolina governments; nonpartisan (constitutionalist) Governor Francis W. Pickens was allowing food and water into the fort, as long munitions or troops were not brought in.
