The Utah War continues: Democratic (constitutionalist) President Buchanan appoints former Mayor Alfred Cumming, of Augusta, Georgia—a non-believer in the Jesus Christ Church of Latter-day Saints (a.k.a. “Mormonism”)—as Governor of the federal enclave of Utah.  Cumming is replacing Brigham Young, who led the LDS across the wilderness to Utah.  Young will retain his office as President of the LDS Church, a post which he inherited after the assassination of the first LDS President Joseph Smith.
