Whig (nationalist) President Taylor signs the Apportionment Act of 1850, expanding the membership of the House of Representatives from 227 to 233, slightly reducing the influence of special interests. More importantly, the act eliminates the requirement that the States they divide themselves into winner-take-all districts, for suffrage in the House of Representatives. This again affords the opportunity for better representation of political minorities through proportional representation.
