Whig (nationalist) State Representative Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, leads his colleagues out a window after having found the doors locked by the Democratic (constitutionalist) leadership.  The Democrats were trying to bring to a vote on certain passage of a bill that would require State banks to redeem their banknotes for lawful money (gold and silver Coin).

NOTE: Democrats used the incident to tag Lincoln with the unsavory moniker of “Leaping Lincoln.”
