Whig (nationalist) Senator Henry Clay, of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, delivers his “I had rather be right than president” speech on the floor of the Senate, in which he condemns abolitionism and denies that Congress has the power to interfere with slavery where it already exists.
NOTE: Clay had already run for the presidency twice as a Republican (constitutionalist) in 1824 and 1832. He would lose again as a Whig in 1948.
