Prince regent, Pedro, of Portugal, declares the colony of Brazil independent of Portugal and himself as Emperor Pedro “the Liberator” I.  The Portuguese monarchy had temporarily relocated to Brazil during the turmoil of the Napoleonic World (the Peninsular) War of 1807, and left Prince Pedro behind to rule the colony.
