ELECTION DAY: Republican (constitutionalist) President Monroe is nearly unanimously re-elected (231-1).  The sole Electoral vote cast against Monroe, came from Republican former Governor William Plumer, of New Hampshire, who voted for John Quincy Adams, Secretary of State.  Plumer wanted to draw attention to Adams as a future presidential candidate, and to ensure that George Washington would remain as the only president to have been unanimously elected.
