Republican (constitutionalist) Vice President Thomas Jefferson, ghost writer of the “Kentucky Resolutions, writes to Republican Representative James Madison, of the Commonwealth of Virginia, ghost author of the Virginia Resolutions, suggesting that they both incorporate, into their secessionist essays, the phrase, “sever ourselves from the [U]nion we so much value, rather than give up the rights to self-government which we have reserved.”
