The XYZ Affair: Three agents of Charles Maurice, Prince de Talleyrand, Foreign Minister of the Republic of France, approach the united States’ peace delegation upon their arrival in Paris.  They suggest that for a bribe of 240,000 Dollars to Talleyrand, and loan to France, the Navy of France will cease its commandeering of American shipping.
