Former Member Jean-Baptiste Royer, of the National Assembly of the Republic of France, publishes “Reflections of a patriotic Citizen on the issue of assignats,” arguing that assignat fiat (Latin for “let it become) currency cannot lose purchasing power (inflation). Royer argues to the National Assembly, “If it is necessary to create five thousand millions, and more, of the paper, decree such a creation gladly.” The claim is even made in the pamphlet that gold Coin (lawful Money) will eventually lose value against the assignat.
