Benjamin Lincoln, former Secretary of War, commanding a mercenary force raised by Governor James Bowdoin, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts—without the consent of the legislature—defeats the farmer’s Militia, commanded by former Captain Daniel Shays, also of the Continental Army.  Shays was attacking the federal armory at Springfield, in an attempt defend their farms and homes from foreclosure due to inability to pay their property taxes.
