Governor Patrick Henry, of the Commonwealth of Virginia, signs the Statute for Religious Freedom, disestablishing the Anglican (Episcopal) Church as the state religion, denying the AC a 10% tithe collected through taxation, and guaranteeing religious freedom to all Christians, Jews, Moslems and Hindus.
