After a six-week siege, Major General Benjamin Lincoln, commanding a garrison of 5,000 regulars of the Continental Army surrenders Charles Town (a.k.a. Charleston) South Carolina to Lieutenant General Henry Clinton, of the Army of Great Britain.  This the largest capitulation of the war by the united States.
