The Battle of Great Bridge: Colonel William Woodford, commanding the Second Virginia Regiment, defeats the Ethiopian Regiment (emancipated slaves) and the Queen’s Own Loyal Virginia Regiment, commanded by John Murray, Earl of Dunmore, Governor of the colony of Virginia. One of Woodford’s militiamen suffered an injury to his thumb.
Postscript: The defeat forced Murray to flee from Virginia, leaving the colony without a royal governor.
