The Battle of Hampton: Colonel Lawrence Taliaferro, commanding the Militia of the colony of Virginia, defeats a squadron of six ships and a land contingent of Royal Marines, commanded by Captain Matthew Squire, of the Royal Navy.  Squire had been ordered by Lord John Murray Dunmore, Royal Governor of Virginia to burn the town of Norfolk to the ground.
