Bernard of Kilwinning, Chancellor of Scotland and Abbot of Arbroath, addresses the Declaration of Arbroath (a.k.a. Scottish Declaration of Rights) to Pope John XXII (r. 1316 – 1334). The declaration asserts Scotland’s independence and right to self-defense. The final article reads, “It is not for honor or glory or wealth that we fight, but for freedom alone, which no good man gives up except with his life.”
